Honestly one of the most frustrating things about media analysis is the fact that the tendency for people to project onto the characters (either their own feelings or their biases) leads to a lot of people seeing things that just aren't there.

People look at the suitors and go "Aha! Well *I* would be jealous in this situation, so clearly there is a froth of conflict boiling under the surface, hidden under the veneer of gentlemanly conduct!"

And someone coming in without like, pre-existing expectations of how the characters are, will see that and go "the fuck? they're literally hanging out. none of them even get snippy with Arthur over Lucy's choice."

And then that kind of dynamic that wasn't in the book winds up in multiple adaptations and the unsupported and misguided opinion dominates <_<

Your jealousy comment reminds me of one printed analysis in a Dracula copy that claims the three suitors are subtextually violently jealous of each other. Lucy shook up the foundations of their bond, and the blood transfusions are really a series of acts of dominance against each other. And that this tension between them gets resolved once they all agree to kill Lucy, the cause of their trouble, and the gang violence upon her is what finally restores their homosocial peace.

I think it was that analysis that I was thinking of tbh!

I find it so aggravating because there's no evidence for it. Like sure, you can draw all kinds of conclusions about the blood transfusions and the killing of Lucy. There's subtext there, that's fine, whether it's sexual or about foreign invasion or whatever you like.

But there is just zero evidence that there's jealousy between the suitors. There is a notable lack of jealousy. We know exactly what Jack is feeling because he tells us, at length and without a filter. He's devastated not to be marrying Lucy but jealousy does not come into it. We don't get the same insight into Quincey's feelings, but there's no jealousy in what we do see. The first thing that happens after Lucy rejects Jack and Quincey is that the three suitors all turn to each other.

I know that I am very polyamorous about this book but honestly I think that's the more rewarding analytical lens. They all propose to the same woman; they all share their blood with her; and they all kill her (gothic inversion of the consummation of a marriage and all that), and that binds them together forever, cementing their existing bond. If I was going down this kind of route, I would argue that they end up as brother-husbands in a symbolic marriage that is centred on Lucy, and that becoming her widowers only brings them closer.

But I'm not a critic so I'll just carry on writing smut where they all fuck instead :)

Everyone that has a year of birth is actually a year younger than their profile says because the story happens during March and April, I think their birthdays were picked after the ages were set and probably it wasn't taken in consideration that it would make them younger than their profile says (if you take the year of birth in their timelines) for Marcille and Izutsumi it doesn't count much cause they actually have their birthdays at the end of the story. But honestly I wouldn't take that too seriously, I think the age in their profiles is the intended age they are and the birthdays were probably an afterthought that wasn't considered when setting their ages for the story (So I'd think their year of birth is wrong rather than their ages if that makes sense)

Anyway, the story happens between 03/15 and 04/27 of 514 so these characters had birthdays during the story

Speaking of there was a theory going around a while ago that 3 years prior to the game's start Something happened to each of the Sinners that then led to their recruitment - or smth similar, my memory is a bit foggy on it - so having more of their Events line up would be funny

OH YEAH!! i've always been really big on that theory, even if they seem to be detaching themselves from it lately. it would be really interesting if the sinners were also connected by other dates... hmm.

the three games' timeline doesn't have a lot of hard confirmations, but we know leviathan seems to take place in 983, while ruina should take place during 982. furthermore, mephisto's engine used 981 as its anchoring point for extraction- only makes sense to assume the white nights and dark days happened in 981.

for the sinners, the only one that's given us some explicit time is ishmael, but it fits for most of the others we've seen so far:

🪓 - the middle's retribution, then rodion leaving district 25 and the yurodiviye. we know she wandered around a bit after doing that, and she was familiar with j corp., so it'd make sense for this time frame to be of a couple years. no points of reference in the book as iirc c&p all takes place in the same year, save for the epilogue which is after rodion's 8 years condemnation.

🐣 - sinclair was in school during the main events of his backstory. it concides with demian (1919), where at 16 he starts going through his Pretty Bad years, throwing himself into alcohol, then meeting beatrice- a while after he will meet demian again and surpass his two worlds mindset. so that's reflected in the game in their final meeting after his family's death, which should take place in 981 when he's like 17/18, lining up with him being around 20 at game start.

🪶 - 981 would be the fall of the league. yi sang's age plays a big role in the meta reading of this: the historical yi sang died young at 26, after contracting tbc while imprisoned in japan. this reflects on the circumstances of the league's fall in game, with the dialogue all but explicitly saying yi sang no longer considered himself to be "living" afterwards. the following 3 years would be the ones spent in n corp., with the latter part of 983 spent working with faust on mephistopheles and the extraction engine.

⛪ - the pequod sinks in 981, canon as of canto 5-36

⛈️ - we have a solid book reference, heathcliff leaves wuthering heights for 3 years! it checks out with the game content: 981 would be his departure, he runs with the rabbits for a couple years, leaves and ends up in lcb, the rabbits end up wiped shortly after. it checks out with the household's timeline too: catherine's condition worsening after like 2 years of radio silence makes sense, then hermann starts accosting nelly around that time, having made good progress on the mirror thanks to yi sang and aseah's work. the work on the lab starts around 983, cathy canonically enters the coffin on may 984.

as for the others, we've got:

🪳 and 🔮 - both of their Defining Events take place 20 years ago in 964, which is a fun coincidence. beside this, i do think 981 might come into play for both of them. for gregor, while he wasn't doing anything special during it, it could be that 981 is meaningful to something hermann was doing. for hong lu, i don't... think? he's been outside of daguanyuan since 981 (which is currently FOUR years ago), but well. we don't know what has happened to him between 964 and current times, so anything still goes.

🎠 - not even touching this one come on

🚬 and 🌇 - we still know Nothing about ryoshu, but leaving "the baby still at the house" sounds like a reasonable thing i'd place in a four year range. for meursault too, there's always been a lot of talk about his sun event, carmen and WN&DD, which i still find really plausible. that'd be, his defining Murder taking place in 981 during the white nights. that'd be a pretty long time to be on death row, if he still is, but it checks out.

👻 and 👢 - our wildcards. faust could go either way, we don't know what the gesselschaft is really trying to do with their knowledge, and how it connects to the light and to lobcorp. goethe's faust just has So Many Fucking Events that it's hard to pinpoint what concepts and story beats they're going to adapt. outis presents a similar problem, because it would make logical sense for her Thing to also be 10 years ago like gregor and hong lu... but then one of odysseus' last stops before going home is the 7 years he spends with calypso before the gods tell her to let him go, so they could decide to do something with that instead and tie that into the WN&DD somehow...

Theres some fun options. Honestly- I've been a bit disappointed in how they've been integrating the characters into the world, how nobody has mentioned WN&DD yet, how nobody has anything to say about the smoke war, any memories of it... idk. They're obviously avoiding it so they can retcon stuff when needed (see Don Quixote lol) but itd be nice to see some more work on how the characters interact with the city's history. Sitting and pondering.

Hi! So, this may get a bit long but there’s a Spider-Man issue that I only read the start of and haven’t been able to find since where Peter goes temporarily blind while working with DD and DD has to lead him around (just remembered it was titled The Blind Leading the Blind! I think I found it in one of the epic or masterworks collections) but that’s not the part that stuck with me:

while Peter can’t see he relies heavily on his spider-sense to get around, and after a short time it starts to function nearly identically to Matt’s radar sense; they’re heavily implied (and maybe explicitly stated) to be the same power, and I personally have kind of latched onto it as my radar sense explanation even if it’s never brought up again.

For one, it fits with the original portrayal of the radar sense as a sort of warning when Matt is about to walk into things, and considering that Peter and Matt got their powers in very similar manners (radiation) it would make sense that they have an overlapping powerset. Both get enhanced senses, but because Peter can still see he doesn’t depend on them the way Matt does and instead perceives them more instinctually.

depending on what you prefer you can also make the argument that the spider-sense and radar sense aren’t even an extra sense at all, just an amalgamation of all the other senses, but I do think it’s a cool theory and it would be cool to see the similarities between the two explored more! (Also, if you do know what issue I’m talking about I would love to know so I can finish it ❤️❤️❤️)

The story you're thinking of is told in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) #26-28 (right here). It's a favorite of mine, and a really sweet episode in the development of Matt and Peter's friendship.

You're spot-on here, and I love your point that seeing Peter try to navigate while blind calls back to that first iteration of the radar sense, which was very clearly based on the Spider Sense. I've also never thought about the possibility of Matt's powers and Peter's being connected, and it's a really interesting and thought-provoking hypothesis. Thank you so much for sharing!

Personality: A taciturn and seemingly distant young man with a permanently annoyed face, but acts more of a tsundere when shown affection by other people, especially from his partners. He doesn't want to admit, but he can be quite the loverboy and would occasionally flirt with either Stacie or Mikey (mostly Stacie, Mic is as oblivious as a rock but that's part of the charm) from time to time. When fighting however, he would become a lot more trigger happy to shoot a bullet through your skull and acts a lot more aggressive and expressive. He takes his role as a bodyguard half seriously at first, but he gets more invested in his job overtime as he fell in love with Stacie and later Mic.

Personality flaw: Whenever something irks him, he becomes more antsy, impulsive and hot headed about it. He has a very hard time trusting others around him, especially strangers and people he doesn't like and would be more protective of his partners. Loud screams and epileptic lights reverts his brain back to the time of the school shooting during middle school, causing himself to hyperventilate and huddle in a dark area or a corner and will instinctively shoot anyone that would suddenly touch him. He's slowly getting better from it, though there are times he would regressed back progress if the trigger was severe.

Likes: Vocaloid, Crunk hip hop, working out at the gym, spending time with his partners, card games, initiating fights, compete in tournament battles with Mic, showing his muscles and physical flexibility, but likes to wear baggy clothing when spending alone time with Mic, hamburgers, Pepsi, gun shooting practice, firearms in general, showing and giving affection his partners (despite how hesitant he may be).

Dislikes: Stacie's parents (doesn't show it), loud screams and flashing lights, green tea, coke (joking), his impulsivity, being vulnerable, waiting.

Backstory (summary): John Dino was definitely a strict father, being a retired military officer and all. Now he works under the Daemon family as a bodyguard and brought him along to get life and work experience at a young age, which was when he met Stacie. At first he didn't really like her, but that soon change down the line as he would spend days together with her, finding her nice to be around now. Since Stacie was still homeschooled he would the mornings and afternoons at his own middle school with his other friends Neena and Darnell who would also visit Stacie from time to time when walking home together. One day without warning, all hell broke loose at the school. Fellow students were screaming and dying as light bulbs would break one by one from the stray bullets, Derrick think of anything else other than to survive (I will not go further than that, I'm not good at writing devastating scenes). Years passed, the memory was still fresh in his mind but kept suppressing it even during college years, and even after meeting Mic. However, he's finally trying to make a change to it as of late, maybe it won't be so bad. So long as he's with his loving partners, he'll definitely be fine.
